4 young callcenter agents from different countries are the focal point of this film. They all work in Amsterdam, at what is known as the Teleport, an area near to the harbour with the highest concentration of call centres in Europe.
Their lives and their work as operators at the pan-European call centres reflect in a very special and at the same time existential fashion what we understand by the terms globalisation, post-modern production methods, flexibility and new working conditions.
For the only thing they can be sure of in their further working life will be constant change.
Call Me Babylon is a piece of research on the horizons of a world on our doorstep.

Since the late nineties, 40% of the large American companies of the New Economy have registered themselves in Holland to set up their continental headquarters there. The working world, particularly for younger people, is changing radically, as there is no longer much production, but organisation and communication instead. Holland is becoming Europe’s experimental field, with the greatest work flexibility, company mobility and number of integrated communications systems. Temping agencies are organising the work market. Thousands of young people are moving to Holland in search of adventure, a temporary job, or maybe because they want to grab globalisation with their own hands.
Michela comes from Italy; following a longer stay in the USA, she has now been in Holland for some time working in Call Center as manager. Martina from Germany came here looking for adventure; she only started a short while ago. Atalan is an Dutch Turk and former karate fighter. John from Ireland is a sailor and now sail by their voice. He stopped his life in Holland finding in love of Michela. They are aged between 19 and 27, they love performing, as they see themselves as performers in their own lives with their varying degrees of adventure. They are like modern vagabonds, who have left firm land far behind them. Their lives are characterised by being fast-moving, having fun, love and rapid change.
Life in this Babylon of high productivity has a great attraction. It soon becomes an existence from which it is hard to turn back.
A computer screen, a set of headphones, the telephone; large, open-plan office buildings where hundreds of young people appear to be talking to themselves at the same time in a confusion of tongues, but where they are really speaking to someone elsewhere in the world in their own language: these are the “trenches”, the place of work for an international call centre agent. Atalan dreams of having his own computer shop; Martina loves going out having fun after her work. Pedro a painter looks at it with distance. Michela, who would like to become a mother with John, holds them all together.
The film will be shot in one shooting phase of three or four weeks. We will not only get to know the work atmosphere, but also the various protagonists on an very emotional and personal level. Just like they are on the phone, they will to a certain extent be performing in front of the camera their daily life.
Background informations will be given by a supervisor, a manager of a call centre or the personal manager of a temping agency.
